She received her PhD in anthropology from the University of Warsaw (2015) for a thesis on the topic of legal, medical, and social contexts of the emergence of transgender subjectivities in Poland. MARIA DĘBIŃSKA is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences. What changes can we observe in strategies of resistance and fight for LGBT+ rights? What can say about the attitudes of Polish and Hungarian societies towards LGBT+ people? To what extent the anti-gender backlash is transnational in nature? What kinds of solidarity can activists and researchers forge across the borders? We will ask about the legal and social background for the current situation. During the discussion, we will compare the situation of LGBT+ people and movements in Poland and Hungary. We invited researchers studying the situation of LGBT+ people in both countries, who at the same time are involved in activities for the rights of minorities. Not earlier than in July this year the European Commission launched legal cases against Hungary’s law banning LGBT+ content for children and Poland’s „LGBT-free” zones. In the past few years Poland and Hungary have been regularly criticised for discriminating LGBT+ people.

The concept and plot of the pilot series was developed by series editor Victoria Holmes. The series is primarily set in fictional forests. Warriors (also known as Warrior Cats) is a series of novels based on the adventures and drama of multiple Clans of feral cats. As a lesbian herself, Kessler felt that it would be making too much of herself public before she had even begun her career. She says now that while she had mixed feelings when the book was turned down, she was aware of “an enormous sense of relief”. It was rejected by 10 companies, including Orion Children’s Books (OCB), with whom Kessler had already done a deal for her first Emily Windsnap novel. Read Me Like a Book is actually the first book Kessler ever wrote, begun while she was on a Manchester Metropolitan University creative writing course and first submitted to publishers by agent Catherine Clarke more than a decade ago. A relationship with a boyfriend proves abortive, but Ashleigh’s feelings about Miss Murray become increasingly intense, and she starts to question herself, coming to recognise that she is a lesbian. Her rather lacklustre school life takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of an inspirational English teacher who really seems to understand her. Instead it’s a contemporary story about a fairly typical, sparky 17-year-old, Ashleigh, muddling her way through many of the common teenage issues-first-date nerves, exam pressures, parent troubles. It is a world away from the Windsnap tales-fantasies about a little girl who is half-mermaid. Liz Kessler, author of the much loved Emily Windsnap middle-grade novels, is to show herself in a new light this spring, with publication of her first YA story, Read Me Like a Book. Embarrassment was dramatized by twirling the hat nervously in both hands at stomach level. Holding the brim between the thumb and the ring and middle fingers, one tipped one’s hat to acquaintances, male and female, encountered on the street. As a kid growing up in the 1940s, I can remember my father instructing me to remove my hat when entering someone’s house-but not a public building, except in the elevator, where one unbonneted out of deference to the women present (the hat stayed on in an all-male car). For today’s watchers of late-night films, such hats signal detectives and gang bosses, lonely romantic heroes and rich guys out on the town. Hombre con Sombrero (Man with Hat), by Joaquín Torres-García © Christie’s Images/Bridgeman ImagesĪll the men in Juan Carlos Onetti’s fiction wear hats: not caps, but proper Borsalinos, wide-brimmed and pinched and cocked at the top into Jean Arp sculptures, gray or black with a subtle silk band-no feathers-initials stamped in gold along the unseen interior sweatband. Except Jock's outing is leaked to the press, turning him into an unwilling gay rights martyr, and he decides France would be a great escape, too. Then Toby's coerced into chaperoning a Theta Alpha Gamma trip to France. He's been left on the outside as his friends pair up into blissful coupledom, and he's in danger of never completing (or starting) his thesis. Toby's heart takes a bruising after the near-perfect experience with Jock leads to. Toby, the hot grad student he meets at a frat party, seems like a great place to start, and their night together is an awesome introduction to the fine art of hooking up. It's all fun and games until someone puts his heart out.Īfter being outed to his hockey team and then changing schools, Jock figures he's due for something good-like the sex he missed out on in the closet. She’s written romance novels and adventure and mystery series, including the Fox and O’Hare and the Lizzy and Diesel books, and the wildly popular Stephanie Plum series (28 installments and counting), about a New Jersey bounty hunter with a tangled love life-and a weakness for junk food (just like Evanovich). “She’s my Indiana Jones.”Įvanovich’s books have sold more than 90 million copies, according to Atria, and have been translated into 40 languages. “I probably enjoyed writing this one more than any other,” Evanovich says of the book, which finds Gabriela traversing jungles in Peru and Costa Rica. It centers on Gabriela Rose, a treasure hunter for hire-and a descendant of the pirate Blackbeard-whose sexy ex-husband routinely complicates her life. She signed a four-book deal, said to be for eight figures, with Atria in 2020, and in March 2022 she’s releasing The Recovery Agent, the first book in a new series. It’s good.”Įvanovich, 78, has been making moves lately. “At this point I just follow my grandkids around the country,” she says. She moved from Florida to Chapel Hill to be closer to her daughter, Alex, and her grandson she also has a condo in Hawaii, where her son, Peter, and his children live. I’m not equipped for video.” The author is in her bedroom, surrounded by boxes, at a makeshift writing desk, her fluffy white dog at her feet. "I just bought a house in North Carolina and I have absolutely no furniture,” Janet Evanovich says via Zoom. Each novel follows one of the sister’s trips to various parts of the world where they find out their family’s history. After his unexpected death, each daughter is left a clue made up of a global grid point, and a small object. The Six D’Aplièse sisters were all adopted by Pa Salt from different parts of the world and brought to live on an island in Lake Geneva. They are all colourful and it is easy to get lost in the novels. The Seven novels combine romance and history brilliantly. The inspiration for these international bestsellers, with sales of 20 million, came as she gazed into the Norfolk night sky at the Pleiades star cluster in 2012. Her greatest success was the Seven Sisters series, where she combined her characters with her lifelong fascination for history. After contracting a glandular illness, which led her to be bedridden for some time at the age of 24, she turned to writing novels. She started her career as an actress in Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Lucinda Riley sadly died in 2021 at the age of 56 from cancer, but she has left a legacy of excellent novels for us to enjoy. While we are on the character development thing, the author has completely made this MC to be perfect. I know that because it was mentioned about ten times in the first and second chapters. No matter that she killed her father (we see no true emotional turmoil for that until the middle of the novel) or ripped some werewolf's head clean off. Let's get married."įURTHER MORE, no character development. This dude mauled me and now I think he is sexy and totally don't care that he MAULED ME? Ok. There is absolutely no conflict when her entire world is completely flipped upside down and she ALMOST DIES. Also, there are spoilers.įirst off, it is way, way, WAY too fast paced. Before I begin this review, let me start with the fact that this book was sooo terribly written that I specifically CREATED A PROFILE ON GOODREADS JUST TO LEAVE A REVIEW. LePera offers readers the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction-activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others-and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born. Wanting more for her patients-and for herself-she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual health that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. |
